It’s been a long, crazy week. The e-mails and phone calls have prompted me to put out an update on Mom’s surgery.
A week ago, Mom had a tumor removed from her head. The large mass was encapsulated and all contained above the scalp. It was definitely cancer, and that mass was totally removed. The major concern was the tentacles that had penetrated the skull and dermis, attaching to a vein.
Mom’s skull was opened and most of the tentacle mess was removed. There is one small portion the doctor did not remove, as he feared it could cause a stroke. Stroke = BAD! There will be a point (currently not known) when radiation will need to be done for the remaining portion.
It is amazing how God has allowed man to come to where we are in medicine. My mother’s surgery was not high risk, but only moderate. Can you imagine? They opened her skull, removing a portion of the bone, did their work and then replaced the bone and sewed her back up. AND released her after a 2 1/2 day stay in the hospital! And that was not a high risk situation!
Mom is doing fine. She has had very little discomfort – in fact, we have to remind her not to over-do; she feels that well. She is not driving yet. She wants to wait to speak to the doctor first. It’s probably a good thing she’s not driving – she’d never be home!
It is interesting how God works. I did not get to spend much time at the hospital, so I was not involved with much of the staff there, other than by phone. This trip to the hospital seemed to be more of God’s desire for my children to see His hand than for me to be a witness to anyone else. Mom’s condition, and her surgery, started some good, deep conversations that haven’t happened with the twins in awhile. I also had an opportunity to spend some time with my sister – we hadn’t spoken in about nine months.
God has been working in me too, but I’ll save that for another time.
Please continue to be in prayer for Mother’s full recovery/remission from this cancer.
Thank you for your prayers and concern,
