Extinction is Forever – Help Save Endangered Values!

I’m beginning to recognize the signs. The looks when I open the door for someone, or offer to reach an upper shelf for someone wheelchair or motorized cart bound, or let the person behind me go first in line because they have less to check out. The interesting thing is, the looks aren’t of disgust but of confusion – that look of “Did I really see that, I thought that went the way of the dinosaurs!”

Yes, the signs clearly point to the fact my values are in danger of becoming extinct. That’s sad, but it’s still encouraging. Like an environmental activist goes to bat for the ecosystem challenged gray wolf, or the whooping crane, I am out to save two of today’s socially challenged, endangered species I call ‘values’ and ‘ethics’.

So, I’m asking you – my fellow archaic valued friends – to join me in my fight!  It’s simple.  For less than zero cents per day, you can keep doing what you’re doing.  Keep smiling at the stranger, helping those in need, putting others before yourself. Do it every day. These poor, abused, abandoned values and ethics need YOUR help.  Please, don’t turn your back on them. They would never turn their backs on you.

Thank you for your support!

Tiller And Long Murders

The stories of two very different lives with similar fates crossed through the media’s hands yesterday — both equally important but one lacked the proper attention. The death of 67-year old George Tiller was unacceptable, but equally disgusting was another death that police believe was politically and religiously motivated as well.

William Long died yesterday. The 23-year old Army Recruiter was gunned down by a fanatic; another fellow soldier was wounded in the ambush. The soldiers had just completed their basic training and were talking to potential recruits, just as my son, Track, once did.

Whatever titles we give these murderers, both deserve our attention. Violence like that is no way to solve a political dispute nor a religious one. And the fanatics on all sides do great disservice when they confuse dissention with rage and death.

2009 – Happy New Year

There are a million things I was going to put here.  But God has impressed one thing so heavily on my heart that it is the only thing I am going to add to my current resolve.

I have been lax on sharing the gospel with unregenerate family.  I have seen the results of  their lives and thanked God that there but by His grace is the result I, too, would be living.  While I know these family members have heard the gospel,  (many have even said they are saved, only to walk away from God within a matter of time )  I have been remiss in proclaiming it over and over in each interaction with them.  Most of them are far away and are only an online, or phone interaction, but that is nothing more than an excuse.

My resolve is to not only look for His opportunities to share the good news of His Son, Jesus Christ, with strangers – but to be sure to share the good news with those who aren’t!

Father, Your word says we need only ask for Your wisdom and You will show it to us.  I am asking now, in Your Son’s precious name, for the wisdom needed to live an example of Your Son that will shine so brightly it will be seen even when I am not.

Give me wisdom to meditate on Your word, apply it to myself and live it to the fullness of Your glory.  Father, I pray You will use me as Your vessel – in service to Your will.  Amen.

Shout Hallelujah, Come On Get Happy!

So, your smile may be more than just YOUR umbrella!smiley

They say misery loves company, but the same may be even more true of happiness.

In a study published online today by the British Medical Journal, scientists from Harvard University and UC San Diego showed that happiness spreads readily through social networks of family members, friends and neighbors.

Knowing someone who is happy makes you 15.3% more likely to be happy yourself, the study found. A happy friend of a friend increases your odds of happiness by 9.8%, and even your neighbor’s sister’s friend can give you a 5.6% boost.

“Your emotional state depends not just on actions and choices that you make, but also on actions and choices of other people, many of which you don’t even know,” said Dr. Nicholas A. Christakis, a physician and medical sociologist at Harvard who co-wrote the study.

The research is part of a growing trend to measure well-being as a crucial component of public health. Scientists have documented that people who describe themselves as happy are likely to live longer, even if they have a chronic illness.

The new study “has serious implications for our understanding of the determinants of health and for the design of policies and interventions,” wrote psychologist Andrew Steptoe of University College London and epidemiologist Ana Diez Roux of the University of Michigan in an accompanying editorial.

Christakis and UCSD political scientist James H. Fowler examined the relationships of nearly 5,000 people who were tracked for decades as part of the landmark Framingham Heart Study.

They discovered that happy people in geographic proximity were most effective in spreading their good cheer. They also found the happiest people were at the center of large social networks.

In many regards, they concluded, happiness is like a contagious disease.

Wow! Maureen Dowd Is As Witchy As Her Picture Makes Her Look!

This is ONE BITTER OPINION!!!  And it was PRINTED in the New York edition of The New York Times.  No surprise there, huh?  And Miss Dowd’s 1973 B.A. in English from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. apparently trumps Mrs. Palin’s degree, in Communications – Journalism, with a minor in poly-sci from the University of Idaho. Umm, wait a minute….  It appears Gov. Palin might be more qualified for Maureen’s job too!!  [See how easy it is?]

Why in heaven’s name would anyone – male or female, black or white, sane or insane, subject themselves to the type of back-biting, name-calling, mud-slinging little thing we Americans call politics?

I’m just saying…

When Does Enough Become Enough?

Sunday, August 3, 2008, Mexican soldiers crossed into the United States of America, and held a border patrol officer at gunpoint! They returned to Mexico after backup patrol arrived in support of the unnamed agent. You can read about this incident in this article by the Washington Times.

This is not the first time this has happened. It is a known fact that Mexican soldiers have been hired to protect the drug smugglers who cross our open borders. Someone is gonna die – and I guarantee you if it’s a Mexican illegal, there will be hell to pay for the one killing them. If it’s an American border guard – ‘eh, not so much…… Not to mention the dead and “walking dead” that these smuggled drugs create…

We MUST protect our borders. We MUST remove those here illegally – and they aren’t all from Mexico. We MUST remain the SOVEREIGN, UNITED States of America. Shouldn’t everyone in our land be following the laws of our land? And shouldn’t our laws be enforced?

And we don’t have a candidate this election cycle with the hutzpah to do any of these things.

Other Than The Sunburn, I Have Survived ‘Warped Tour’.

Well, actually I guess that’s only partly true.  Warped Tour is not over until 9 pm and I DID leave at 4.  Too tired, too hot and too much activity for one day!  The sunburn, however is full blown!  No partial to that.

Warped Tour, for those who don’t know, is a tour of 50 or so bands sponsored by Vans shoes.  Now all 50 bands are not normally there, but I’m guessing about 30 of them are at each venue.  Today’s venue was in Bonner Springs, KS – at The Ampitheatre.  There were 6 stages with something happening on atleast one of them at all times.  Quite the adventure.  And it is a mixed bag of bands, some Christian, some Screamo, some Scene, all interesting.  I came along for the ride with my daughter and her friend, Carlie.  They are hanging with concert buddy, Kenna, in Platte City after the concert ends tonight.

You know, I’m used to seeing the kids in their crazy clothes.  When I was young, girls were getting into wearing guys clothes…. now it’s the other way around.  Tons of guys are now wearing girl’s “skinny jeans” – and I have to say, some of these guys can’t pull off the “skinny” part any better than some of the girls!!  I expected the bikini tops – after all it IS 90 outside today.  I expected lip piercings, bridge piercings, “Monroe” and “Madonna” piercings and tons of tattoos.  I even expected “Obama” and “Get the Vote” people out in droves trying to register voters.  I was not so much surprised as amused by the supporters of legalized marijuana and the “pot leaf” necklaces (fake) – I mean, I thought that ship sailed in the 70’s!!  What I wasn’t ready for was how commonplace two things have become with young adults – the use of tobacco and the use of the “F-word”.  It is no longer just for “verbiage” anymore.  Nope, it is now a full fledged noun AND an adjective!  It flows freely from the lips of everyone from about 10 on.  And cigarettes!  For pete’s sake, two of my daughter’s friends smoke – and NEITHER of them are legally old enough to buy cigarettes!

I smoked from the time I was 13 until I was 36 – and I could just kick each and every teen I see with a cigarette hanging from their lips.  What a stupid, expensive habit – and, remember, I am speaking from experience.  And it isn’t as if I have never sworn before.  As a matter of fact, before Christ drew me to Him, there were times I got so frustrated I couldn’t think of anything BUT swear words to say.  Maybe that’s part of it…. even then I realized how unintelligent I sounded when I swore.  I only hurled a word when I allowed my anger to get the best of me and I had nothing else to do but act a fool!  It’s not like that now – it isn’t that they are angry, it’s just that they don’t have any developed vocabulary!  This next generation has allowed themselves to become unintelligible – and that scares me.  Swear words are strong words for weak minds.

Don’t even get me STARTED on how girls find it an HONOR to be called a B*t*h!!

I’m just sayin’……. it is important we be praying for the direction of our youth.

July Fool’s Day

Happy July Fool’s Day to you! Now for those who don’t normally read this blog, I have long felt the other eleven months’ fools were cheated because of April and his month! So, I say to you – go out and do something that may make you feel a bit foolish, but will make someone else smile! No pranks, not like nasty April – just something whimsical that will liven up someone’s life.

Smiles are contagious – pass it on!

Free At Last, Free At Last….

Thank God Almighty, I’m free at last!!

My title is a bit misleading. Let me explain.

I have allowed myself to be burdened over something since last October. And I mean allowed myself! Because God Almighty freed me from it the moment I asked His help. He unlocked the chains I had been entangled in and freed me. Problem is, I didn’t shake the chains off!

So, there I was – some eight months later – standing wrapped in heavy chains that weren’t even locked onto me. ::smacks head HARD:: DUH! I have allowed every hurtful little word, every whisper, every mean spirited innuendo of the situation to hurt me to my very core. I will go so far as to say I even positioned myself in a place to receive those things! Yeah, I know – the word stupid comes to mind for me too!

But God!

This morning as I woke up something was different. I don’t know how to explain it. It was as if, as I slept, my heart FINALLY heard the still small voice of the Holy Spirit telling me the chains were only still there because I had not stepped out of them. As I went to put on my armor this morning, I realized, “Hey, this would be much easier to do if I took these chains off first.”

And, so I have. Today, my mind has caught up with the grace God has already given me; and I declare myself OFFICIALLY……….

Proverbs 4 Wrap-Up

Chapter 4 reminds us of the importance of wisdom.  It is important that we listen to our father’s instruction in ways of wisdom.  it is important that we allow wisdom to help us stay on our path, looking neither right or left to lose our focus.

We are to be intent on our learning.  We are not just to let life “happen” – letting the chips fall where they may.  We, as believers, are to live in a manner that reflects the work Christ is doing through us.  That is true wisdom – and it is worth more than any silver or gold can be.

Do you realize that for a long time [scholars place it around 1530″ish”BC] there was not anything written down for the faithful.  The children learned from their parents.  The very knowledge of God and His creatiion, His character, His standards, His traits rested on the handing down from generation to generation.  Fathers were faithful to pass on to the sons…. even grandfather to grandson.  It was uber important for the younger generation to listen and learn from those who came before them.

We should still be living like that today!  We have the written, inspired word of God to refer to.  We should be paying strictest attention to what His word has to say to us.

I’m just saying….
